Robert Parker, RIP

by Lisa Sisley on February 26, 2010

Author Robert Parker died on January 18, and my family has been mourning ever since: Parker’s books are a shared experience among us, especially the books starring his main protagonist, Spenser (no first name), a Boston private detective. We’ve all read many, many Spenser novels, as well as Parker’s Sunny Randall and Jesse Stone series (I’m not so hot on Jesse Stone, but my mom is a big fan because the enduringly gorgeous Tom Selleck plays him in the TV movies).

You Don’t Want a Flash Site (Because It Will Suck)

by Shawn Dryden on February 23, 2010

I was recently alerted to a new company (they will remain nameless because of the obvious shame) and went to their website to check them out. When I pulled up the site, I was slowly filled with sadness, mirroring the little animation on the screen that ran while I waited for it to load. The site had been built in Flash and it was terrible.

New Boston Wins Best of Show from American Advertising Federation of Topeka!

by Kristin Brighton on February 9, 2010

Everyone around here (except maybe Shawn) is a sucker for the opportunity to get dressed up for a night on the town. So, we always look forward to caravanning to the Capitol City for the annual ADDY awards show, dressed in our after-Christmas-clearance best and dusted-off heels (except maybe for Shawn…who did look equally stunning and dust-free).

After all, when else do you get to dress up in your glittery finest and come home with as many medals as Michael Phelps?

Client Spotlight: K-State College of Arts & Sciences

by Jami Weisbender on February 8, 2010

This particular client brings a proud tear to our eye and makes us toss up a hearty fist-pump in honor of days past. The fact is that more than half our team at New Boston heard those sweet notes of “Pomp and Circumstance” while graduating from this very College.

We Love Kansas

by Kristin Brighton on January 25, 2010

Kansas may not have noticed yet, but we are outside its window, holding a stereo above our heads, playing Peter Gabriel.

User Expectations on the Web: Ignore Them at Your Peril

by Chris Ostrom on December 15, 2009

We recently launched a wicked-cool e-commerce website for a local quilting shop, All About Quilts. Besides being enlightened about an entire (seriously devoted, decidedly hard-core) quilting industry and subculture, I also learned a valuable lesson about developer assumptions and user expectations.

Happy Festivus!

by Lisa Sisley on December 11, 2009

So that you might have some sense of the dignity and decorum with which we conduct ourselves (believe me, it’s not a lot), please take a gander as we strut our stuff!

Client Spotlight: Tallgrass Brewing Company

by Susan Religa on December 3, 2009

When we hear “product testing,” we automatically think of our favorite market research, Tallgrass beers and ales. We’re pretty good about “testing” Tallgrass on Friday afternoons.

Drupal Goes to Washington! (Great, Now, Umm...What's a Drupal?)

by Chris Ostrom on November 20, 2009

The White House recently chucked its Bush-era web application in favor of the open-source content management system, Drupal. Such news might leave you exclaiming “Sweet!” or “Right on!” if only you had any idea what “a Drupal” is…or for that matter, what a content management system is…or what open source means.

Web Design Myth #432: Less Is Always More

by Shawn Dryden on November 19, 2009

The Internet likes to take all your preconceived ideas about design and occasionally turn them on their head. I’ll show you one site that figured out that sometimes more, is in fact, more.

Connect the Dots, Baby!

by Lisa Sisley on November 13, 2009

In a terrific session on new product launches from the Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center’s 3rd Annual Manufacturing Executive Conference in Kansas City, several manufacturing leaders talked about the difficulty of differentiating between “features” and “benefits” in proposals, websites or brochures, a problem that we often help our clients with.

The Impact of Little Green Shopping Carts

by Kristin Brighton on November 13, 2009

When I meet with clients, I frequently ask, “What makes you different from your competition?” Take a second to look around your business, and put yourself in your customers’ shoes. What could be done to make the experience of doing business with you more enjoyable? Let me share a personal example…

What Small Businesses Should Know About Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)

by Chris Ostrom on November 12, 2009

For a small business, contracting for web design services is a lot like buying a car. You don’t need to know how the internal combustion engine works, but you do need to know the power and fuel efficiency differences between a V8 and a hybrid. Similarly, you don’t need a Herculean grasp on web conventions, like cascading style sheets or CSS, but you do need to know why they are important.

Ready for a New Year?

by Kristin Brighton on November 10, 2009

To compete in today’s roller-coaster economy, it’s essential to have a clear vision of what you want your business to be when it grows up. While it’s much easier to allow yourself to get bogged down working IN your business, your livelihood can be won or lost by how dedicated you are to working ON your business.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) First and Social Media Second

by Chris Ostrom on October 30, 2009

If I had a dollar for every time clients asked about how they can be hip and build social media into their websites, I’d have enough venture capital to fund my great new app that will light up an iPhone like a Zippo lighter at concerts. (What? You mean “there’s an app for that” already? NOOO!)
